Cross-country summer conditioning
Summer conditioning is being held everyday, 10:30 a.m., at the Anchor Bay Aquatic Center. Additionally, some boys are meeting on their own at 8 a.m. at the pool. Please join us. The general expectation is for returning varsity runners to develop a fitness base of 30-50 miles per week, returning JVs to be 20-30 and newcomers who have no distance running experience to log 15-20 miles each week. This is essential for the work that we will be doing once the season starts on Aug. 9!
Welcome
Anchor Bay High School is located on the Macomb and St. Clair County border on the shores of Lake St. Clair in the northeastern suburbs of metro Detroit, Mich. Our community is a mix of suburban and rural areas including portions of the townships of Chesterfield, Casco, Ira and Lenox and the city of New Baltimore. Our boys' cross-country program was founded in 1969 by coach James Cleverley. In the late 1970s girls began running with the boys before a separate team was begun in 1979. Coach Cleverley retired from coaching in 1989 though he continues to work as a track & field and cross-country meet official in our area and throughout the state of Michigan. Since 1991, the Running Tars have been coached by Jeff Payne, who graduated from ABHS in 1987 before continuing his collegiate career at Lake Superior State University, then graduating from Michigan State University in 1991. Since 1969, we have had numerous teams and individuals achieve great success in this sport. Some highlights include Jeff Mundt, who was the Class A state champion in 1981 and runner-up in 1982 and 1983, a year in which he was also named a Kinney (now Footlocker) All-American after placing 15th at the national championships held at Balboa Park in San Diego, CA. Our 1977 boys team placed 6th at the Class B state finals. More recently, Christina Colombe was named an AAU All-American after placing 12th at the AAU National Championships in Reno, NV. in 1995 and Chris Mehay was named Division I All-State after placing 15th at the state finals in 2002. Mikey Zedan, who later went on to run at The Ohio State University, earned All-State honors in 2017. Participation is open to all Anchor Bay High School students in good standing and highlights of our season include a five-day team camp in August and an overnight trip to compete at the Michigan State University Spartan Invitational every September.
